Phone glass replacement is one of the most common repairs at mobile phone shops — and one of the most commonly misunderstood. Most users do not know that there is a difference between a glass replacement and a screen replacement, nor that repairing only the top glass can save a significant amount of money. In this article we explain what glass replacement actually involves, how much it costs for iPhone and Samsung models in 2026, what the procedure looks like and when it makes sense instead of a complete screen replacement.
Screen glass and screen — they are not the same thing
The screen of a modern phone consists of several layers. On top is the protective glass (the top layer you touch), beneath it the OCA adhesive (Optically Clear Adhesive), then the display panel itself (OLED or LCD), and at the bottom the lower frame with flexible cables.
When you drop your phone and the glass cracks, that does not automatically mean the whole screen is faulty. If the display still shows an image normally — with no lines, blotches, dead pixels or touch problems — then only the top glass layer is damaged. In that case you do not have to replace the complete screen. It is enough to replace only the glass through a procedure known as OCA lamination.
This difference directly affects the repair price. Replacing the complete screen for newer iPhone models ranges from 12,000 to as much as 74,000 RSD depending on quality, while repairing only the glass for the same model costs from 5,000 to 18,000 RSD — a saving that can be up to 50%.

How OCA lamination works
OCA lamination is a professional procedure for replacing only the top glass of the screen. Here is what the process looks like at the shop:
Step 1 — Diagnostics. The technician inspects the screen under a UV lamp and against a white background. We check whether the display works without any defects. If there is even the smallest problem with the image — a complete screen replacement is recommended instead of a glass repair.
Step 2 — Separating the glass. The phone is placed on a separator machine that softens the OCA adhesive between the glass and the display with controlled heat (80-85°C). The glass is carefully separated with a wire, taking care not to damage the display panel underneath.
Step 3 — Cleaning. Residue of the old OCA adhesive and glass is removed from the display. The surface must be perfectly clean — even the smallest particle can create a bubble visible under the screen.
Step 4 — Lamination. The new OCA glass is precisely positioned and bonded to the display in a vacuum laminator. The vacuum ensures there are no air bubbles between the layers.
Step 5 — Autoclave. The phone is placed in an autoclave (a pressure chamber) for 15-20 minutes. A pressure of several atmospheres removes microscopic bubbles and ensures a perfect bond of the glass.
Step 6 — Quality control. A final inspection under the UV lamp, a touch test, a test of Face ID and the sensors. The phone is returned to the customer.
The whole procedure takes 1 to 2 hours.
When glass repair is worth it, and when a screen replacement is
Glass repair is the right solution when the following conditions are met: the screen shows an image without any defects (no lines, blotches, dead pixels, discoloration), the touchscreen responds normally across the whole surface, and only the top glass layer is damaged (cracks, scratches, fragments).
A complete screen replacement is necessary when: the screen shows lines or blotches, there are dead pixels or dark zones, touch does not respond on parts of the screen, the screen shows a green or purple color, or horizontal/vertical bands appear.
On Samsung models with curved screens (S21 Ultra, S22 Ultra, S23 Ultra, S24 Ultra, S25 Ultra), glass repair is more complex but still feasible. Flat Samsung screens (the A series) are simpler to repair.
Warranty and durability
On glass repair we give a 3-month warranty that covers the quality of the installation and the part itself. OCA glass is comparable in quality to factory glass — the same optical properties, scratch resistance and touch sensitivity. The only difference is that this glass does not have the Ceramic Shield (Apple) or Gorilla Glass (Samsung) label, because those branded protections exist exclusively on factory screens.
Practice shows that a repaired screen lasts as long as the original — provided quality OCA glass and professional lamination equipment are used. At the Viper shop we use industrial equipment for vacuum lamination and autoclave treatment, which ensures durability identical to the factory process.

Why most shops do not offer this service
Glass repair requires specialized equipment — a separator machine, a vacuum laminator and an autoclave — whose total value exceeds several thousand euros. It also requires significant technician experience, because the risk of damaging the display is real if the procedure is not performed correctly.
For that reason most shops in Belgrade offer only a complete screen replacement, which is a simpler procedure for the technician but significantly more expensive for the customer. OCA lamination is our specialized service, which we have offered since 2004 and which is one of the key differences compared to other shops.
Frequently asked questions
Can I replace the glass on my phone myself?
It is technically possible to buy OCA glass and tools online, but without a vacuum laminator and an autoclave you will not achieve a professional result. Bubbles between the layers are unavoidable without a vacuum, and the risk of damaging the display is high without a professional separator machine. The cost of equipment for home use exceeds the price of a professional repair.
How long does phone glass replacement take?
Glass repair by OCA lamination takes from 1 to 2 hours, depending on the model. Samsung models with curved screens may require somewhat more time. Devices brought in by 2 PM are done the same day.
Is data lost during glass replacement?
No. Glass replacement does not affect the phone's memory or software. Your data, apps and settings remain completely untouched. We do not ask for the code to unlock the phone.
Does glass replacement affect Face ID or the fingerprint sensor?
No. OCA lamination replaces only the top glass layer. The sensors for Face ID (on the iPhone) and the ultrasonic fingerprint sensor (on Samsung) are located beneath the display panel, which is not touched during this procedure.
How do I know whether I need a glass replacement or a screen replacement?
A simple test: turn on the screen and look carefully at the image. If the image is clean, the colors normal, touch responds everywhere, and the only problem is cracks in the glass — you are a candidate for glass repair. If you see any defect in the image itself, a screen replacement is needed. For free diagnostics and a recommendation, call 065/362-61-31.
Is there a difference in quality between a repaired and a new screen?
A repaired screen uses your original display panel — which means you keep the same technology (OLED, Super Retina, Dynamic AMOLED) and the same functions. Only the top glass is replaced. Optically and functionally, there is no difference compared to the factory condition.
What is the difference between a screen protector and OCA glass?
A screen protector (tempered glass) is applied to the surface of the screen as an additional protective layer. OCA glass is an integral part of the screen — it is the top layer that is replaced when it cracks. A screen protector protects the OCA glass from damage, and we recommend applying one after every repair.
