Screen glass replacement is one of the most common repairs at mobile phone service centers — and one of the most commonly misunderstood. Most customers don't know that there's a difference between glass replacement and screen replacement, or that repairing just the top glass can save a significant amount of money. In this article, we explain what glass replacement actually involves, how much it costs for iPhone and Samsung models in 2026, what the process looks like, and when it makes sense instead of a full screen replacement.
Screen glass and the screen — not the same thing
The screen of a modern phone consists of multiple layers. On top is the protective glass (the top layer you touch), below it is OCA adhesive (Optically Clear Adhesive), then the display panel itself (OLED or LCD), and at the bottom the lower frame with flex cables.
When you drop your phone and the glass cracks, that doesn't automatically mean the entire screen is faulty. If the display still shows the image normally — without lines, spots, dead pixels, or touch issues — then only the top glass layer is damaged. In that case, you don't need to replace the entire screen. It's enough to replace just the glass through a process known as OCA lamination.
This distinction directly affects the repair price. A full screen replacement for newer iPhone models ranges from 12,000 to as much as 74,000 RSD depending on quality, while repairing just the glass on the same model costs from 5,000 to 18,000 RSD — a saving of up to 50%.

How OCA lamination works
OCA lamination is a professional process of replacing only the top layer of screen glass. Here's what the process looks like at the shop:
Step 1 — Diagnostics. A technician inspects the screen under a UV lamp and against a white background. We check that the display works without any defects. If there's even the slightest issue with the image, a full screen replacement is recommended instead of glass repair.
Step 2 — Glass separation. The phone is placed on a separator machine that uses controlled heat (80-85°C) to soften the OCA adhesive between the glass and the display. The glass is carefully separated using a wire, taking care not to damage the display panel underneath.
Step 3 — Cleaning. Residue from the old OCA adhesive and glass is removed from the display. The surface must be perfectly clean — even the smallest particle can create a visible bubble under the screen.
Step 4 — Lamination. The new OCA glass is precisely positioned and bonded to the display in a vacuum laminator. The vacuum ensures there are no air bubbles between the layers.
Step 5 — Autoclave. The phone is placed in an autoclave (pressure chamber) for 15-20 minutes. Pressure of several atmospheres removes microscopic bubbles and ensures the glass adheres perfectly.
Step 6 — Quality control. A final inspection under a UV lamp, a touch test, and testing of Face ID and sensors. The phone is returned to the customer.
The entire process takes 1 to 2 hours.
When glass repair is worth it, and when screen replacement is needed
Glass repair is the right solution when the following conditions are met: the screen displays the image without any defects (no lines, spots, dead pixels, discoloration), the touch screen responds normally across the entire surface, and only the top glass layer is damaged (cracks, scratches, chips).
Full screen replacement is necessary when: the screen shows lines or spots, there are dead pixels or dark areas, touch doesn't respond on parts of the screen, the screen displays a green or purple tint, or horizontal/vertical bands appear.
For Samsung models with curved screens (S21 Ultra, S22 Ultra, S23 Ultra, S24 Ultra, S25 Ultra), glass repair is more complex but still feasible. Flat Samsung screens (A series) are simpler to repair.
Warranty and durability
We provide a 3-month warranty on glass repair, covering both the quality of installation and the part itself. The OCA glass is comparable in quality to the factory original — the same optical properties, scratch resistance, and touch sensitivity. The only difference is that this glass doesn't carry the Ceramic Shield (Apple) or Gorilla Glass (Samsung) designation, as these branded protections exist exclusively on factory screens.
Experience shows that a repaired screen lasts just as long as the original — provided quality OCA glass and professional lamination equipment are used. At Viper service, we use industrial vacuum lamination equipment and autoclave treatment, ensuring durability identical to the factory process.

Why most repair shops don't offer this service
Glass repair requires specialized equipment — a separator machine, a vacuum laminator, and an autoclave — with a total value exceeding several thousand euros. It also requires significant technician experience, as the risk of damaging the display is real if the process isn't performed correctly.
For this reason, most repair shops in Belgrade offer only full screen replacement, which is a simpler procedure for technicians but significantly more expensive for the customer. OCA lamination is our specialized service, which we've been offering since 2004, and it's one of the key differences compared to other shops.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I replace the glass on my phone myself?
Technically, it's possible to buy OCA glass and tools online, but without a vacuum laminator and autoclave, you won't achieve a professional result. Bubbles between the layers are unavoidable without a vacuum, and the risk of damaging the display is high without a professional separator machine. The cost of equipment for home use exceeds the price of a professional repair.
How long does phone glass replacement take?
Glass repair via OCA lamination takes 1 to 2 hours, depending on the model. Samsung models with curved screens may require somewhat more time. Devices brought in by 2 PM are ready the same day.
Is data lost during glass replacement?
No. Glass replacement doesn't affect the phone's memory or software. Your data, apps, and settings remain completely untouched. We don't ask for your phone's unlock code.
Does glass replacement affect Face ID or fingerprint recognition?
No. OCA lamination only replaces the top glass layer. The Face ID sensors (on iPhone) and the ultrasonic fingerprint sensor (on Samsung) are located beneath the display panel, which is not touched during this process.
How do I know if I need glass replacement or screen replacement?
A simple test: turn on the screen and carefully look at the image. If the image is clear, colors are normal, touch responds everywhere, and the only problem is cracks in the glass — you're a candidate for glass repair. If you see any defect in the image itself, a screen replacement is needed. For a free diagnosis and recommendation, call 065/362-61-31.
Is there a difference in quality between a repaired screen and a new screen?
A repaired screen uses your original display panel — meaning you keep the same technology (OLED, Super Retina, Dynamic AMOLED) and the same functions. Only the top glass is replaced. Optically and functionally, there's no difference compared to the factory condition.
What's the difference between a protective screen protector and OCA glass?
A screen protector (tempered glass) is applied to the surface of the screen as an additional protective layer. OCA glass is an integral part of the screen — it's the top layer that gets replaced when it cracks. A screen protector protects the OCA glass from damage, and we recommend applying one after every repair.
