Foldable phones — the future that requires specialized service
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip and Z Fold are fascinating phones. A screen that folds, a compact design, premium materials — it all sounds great until something happens to it. And when it does, repairing a foldable phone is a story of its own.
I've been working with foldable phones since the first Z Fold, and I can say this is one of the most complex repairs in the mobile industry. The main display is a flexible Ultra Thin Glass (UTG) — literally glass as thin as a human hair that bends. Replacing that screen requires completely disassembling the phone and precision on the level of micro-surgery.
Two screens — two price lists
Z Fold models have two completely independent displays: a large inner (main) display and a smaller outer (front) display. Z Flip models have a main flexible display and a small cover screen that is not replaced separately.

| Z Flip4 | 46,000 RSD |
| Z Flip5 | 48,000 RSD |
| Z Flip6 | 45,000 RSD |
| Z Flip7 | 45,000 RSD |
| Z Flip7 FE | 30,000 RSD |
Z Fold series — screen replacement
| Model | Main screen | Front screen | Front repair |
|---|---|---|---|
| Z Fold3 | 84,000 RSD | 22,000 RSD | 13,000 RSD |
| Z Fold4 | 78,000 RSD | 17,000 RSD | 10,000 RSD |
| Z Fold5 | 75,000 RSD | 16,000 RSD | 10,000 RSD |
| Z Fold6 | 90,000 RSD | 18,000 RSD | 11,000 RSD |
| Z Fold7 | 90,000 RSD | 20,000 RSD | 13,000 RSD |
Why is the main screen priced so high?
I understand that 90,000 RSD for a screen replacement sounds intimidating. But here's why:
- UTG technology — flexible glass is extremely expensive to manufacture. Samsung produces it in small quantities with a high scrap rate
- Complexity of replacement — the phone must be completely disassembled. Every connector, every screw, everything has to come out before you can reach the screen
- The hinge — the folding mechanism must align perfectly with the new screen. A millimeter of error and the screen cracks at the fold
- Calibration — after replacement, the screen must be calibrated for touch and positioning at the fold
Most common problems with foldable phones
Crease line on the screen
This is the most common "condition" of foldable phones. A visible line or crease appears at the point where the screen folds. On older models (Z Flip3, Z Fold3) this happens more often. On newer models Samsung has improved durability, but the problem still exists.
Black spots on the screen
Small black spots on the screen indicate that individual pixels have failed. On flexible screens this happens more often than on flat ones, because the fold creates mechanical stress on the panel.
Screen doesn't respond to touch after opening
Sometimes the screen "freezes" after opening the phone. This is usually resolved with a restart, but if it keeps happening, the flex cable may be damaged from constant bending.
Tips for extending the life of your foldable phone
- Don't apply a screen protector yourself — use the Samsung original screen protector and don't remove it. The protector is part of the screen's protection system
- Clean the fold regularly — dust and sand in the fold are the number one killer of flexible screens. Use a soft brush
- Don't close the phone with objects between the screens — a pen, coins, cables — all of these can damage the flexible panel
- Avoid extreme temperatures — cold makes the flexible glass brittle, while heat softens the adhesive holding the panel together
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it worth repairing a Z Fold for 90,000 RSD?
It depends on the model. The Z Fold6 costs around 200,000 RSD new, so a repair at 90,000 RSD is more cost-effective than buying a new phone. For older models (Z Fold3) it can be borderline cost-effective.
How long does a screen replacement take on a foldable phone?
2-4 hours for the front screen, 4-6 hours for the main screen. This is serious work that requires time.
Is there a cheaper alternative to replacing the main screen?
Unfortunately, for the main screen there is no glass-only repair like there is on regular phones. The flexible panel cannot be separated into glass and panel — it's a single assembly.
Can the Z Flip screen be replaced on just one half?
No. The Z Flip screen is a single panel that folds — you cannot replace only the top or bottom half.
Do you also replace the hinge?
Yes. The hinge is a mechanical part that wears down over time. Hinge replacement is usually done together with screen replacement, since it requires completely disassembling the phone.
