The back glass on iPhone — why does it break so easily?

From iPhone 8 onward, Apple puts glass on the back of the phone. The reason? Wireless charging — radio waves don't pass through metal, but they do pass through glass. The problem is that this glass loves to crack. And it really loves it.

How is the back glass replaced?

The process depends on the model. On older models (iPhone 8, X, Xs) the back glass is glued with industrial adhesive and requires heating and careful separation. On newer models (iPhone 12 and later) Apple uses a system with screws and magnets that makes replacement easier.

In both cases, the process includes:

• Removing all internal components (battery, logic board, cameras)
• Heating and separating the old glass
• Cleaning the frame of adhesive residue
• Fitting the new glass with precise positioning
• Reassembling the phone and testing

Does a cracked back cover affect functionality?

Short answer: not directly, but it can affect things indirectly. A cracked back cover doesn't by itself affect the phone's operation — everything works normally. However:

• Wireless charging can become unreliable if the cracks are located directly over the charging coil
• Water resistance is compromised — moisture can get in through the cracks
• The glass keeps cracking further — small cracks spread, and pieces of glass can fall out and cut your fingers
• Cameras can be damaged if a crack reaches the camera opening

My advice: you don't have to replace the cover urgently if it's just cracked, but don't wait too long. At least put on a protective case until you can bring it in for service.

How long does the replacement take?

Back glass replacement takes 1-2 hours, depending on the model. Older models (iPhone 8, X) require more time because the glass is glued with stronger adhesive. Newer models are faster to replace.

Does the new glass look the same as the original?

Yes. We use glass that is identical to the original in dimensions, color, and texture. On Pro models the glass is matte (frosted), on standard models it's glossy — exactly like the factory finish.

Does replacing the cover affect water resistance?

The original water resistance (IP68) is compromised once the phone is opened. We use quality sealing material, but we cannot guarantee the same water resistance as the factory original.

Can I just put on a case instead of replacing the glass?

You can, but that's only a cosmetic solution. The cracks remain, moisture can still get in, and the glass can keep cracking further underneath the case. Replacement is the permanent solution.

Why is the back cover for iPhone 15 Plus more expensive than the Pro model?

That depends on parts availability on the market. Plus models sometimes have a larger glass panel that is more expensive to source. Prices change as the market changes.

Do you do back cover replacement while I wait?
